LETTER FROM PRINCIPAL CHRISTA KEPPLER

Dear Lyons Elementary Families,

Dear Lyons Elementary Families, I can hardly believe that the end of the school year is here. Teachers and students have worked hard and it shows based on our spring assessment data and third grade CSAP results. When reviewing the School Improvement Goals this week with the School Accountability Team, I was impressed with the progress we have made as a school. Based on our Action Plan, we accomplished everything we set out to do as a staff! A special thanks to the teachers and parents who participated on the team, Amy Stahl, Jennifer Dailey, Sara Foster-Barone, Kirk Udovich, Dan Greenburg, and Natalie Boggess. I valued everyonešs collective input with our School Improvement Goals and suggestions for continuous improvement for next school year. Participation on the School Accountability Team is open to parents, and is an excellent way to positively influence our school. Please let me know if you are interested in participating on the team for the 2010- 2011 school year.

Our School Improvement Goal in reading for this year was for 78% of students to score in the proficient/advanced range on the Reading CSAP. I am pleased to announce that our Lyons Elementary third graders made noticeable gains this year. In fact, seventy-nine percent of the third graders scored in the category of proficient or above, which is up from seventy-four percent last year. Zero students scored in the unsatisfactory range, up from 12 percent last year. Again, kudos to our teachers for their hard work!! The remaining CSAP results will be released in August.

During the past few Thursday Folders, several resources have been sent home regarding summer enrichment opportunities and ways to promote learning year-round. I highly encourage all students to maintain a nightly reading routine and find ways to enrich their brains through visits to our museums, parks, and keeping a journal of these experiences throughout the summer. We will be saying fairwell to two staff members, JoAnne Domko, our Speech Therapist, and Chelsie Adams, one of our Special Education Paras. Also, Mrs. Rosingana will be taking a Leave of Absence for the 2010 School Year. These staff members have left lasting impressions on the hearts and minds of our students. Thanks to all of them for their positive contributions to our students and the Lyons community.

I will resume my monthly updates in August. I hope you continue to find this communication helpful. Next year I will also be hosting informal coffee forums three times over the course of the year as an opportunity for parents to ask questions and work together to continue to deepen and broaden our partnership. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or suggestions before then. For all grades we will host a Back-to- School night on Tuesday, August 31st.
4:30-5:15 Family Picnic
5:15-5:30 Principal Welcome
5:30-6:00 1st Rotation: Grades 1-5
6:15-6:45 2nd Rotation: Grades 1-5
Tuesday, August 17th, we will host Kindergarten Orientation from 6:00-7:00.

End of Year Celebrations and Events;

* A special thanks to Mrs. Bryan and volunteers for another successful Bookfair and for promoting independent reading with our Book Swap Program.

* Congratulations to our Encore Teacher Award recipient: Amy Stahl, and our finalists- Nancy Roe and Aleta Magaldi.

* Congratulations to our volunteers who were recognized at the district Volunteer Ceremony:

* Carol Pranschke supporting our school with grant writing and publishing writing in the Lyons Recorder.

* Michelle Kramer-using her professional training as an Occupational Therapist to support a small handwriting group.

* Amy Munson-for spending countless hours orchestrating the Silent Auction and supporting our school with fundraising.

* Nancy Parker-for all her contributions with supporting young readers and spellers at LES!

* Fabulous job Shakespeare Performers, and Mrs. Simms on a very successful production! During my introduction to the community at our Open House forum in August, I shared the following principles of a healthy community: focuses on what is possible versus what is wrong; works together with an inclusive identity; realizes what we are doing counts; acts responsibly. I strongly believe in the African concept of Ubuntu (we can be human only together). As we move forward into the next school year, I want to remind everyone of these principles, as it really is about the collective sum of the parts. How do parents, community members, teachers, and students work together to help our school become the best it can be?

Thank you for your partnership in your child's learning. Have a safe, relaxing, eventful summer!

Warm regards,
Christa Keppler
